What is a flex-wing microlight (ULM pendulaire)? Everything you need to know before your flight
You’ve heard about the flex-wing microlight maiden flight and you’re wondering exactly what it involves? Before taking the controls or settling in as a passenger, here is everything you need to know about this fascinating aircraft.
What is a microlight (ULM)?
A ULM (Ultra-Léger Motorisé — ultralight motorised aircraft) is an aircraft whose maximum take-off weight is limited to 450 kg for a two-seater. It is a category in its own right within aviation, regulated in France by the FFPLUM (Fédération Française d’ULM).
The flex-wing: a flexible wing, unique sensations
The flex-wing is one of 6 classes of microlight. Its principle is simple: a flexible wing (derived from the hang-glider) is suspended above a motorised two-seat trike. Piloting is achieved by shifting a control bar, which changes the angle of the wing and therefore the direction of the aircraft. It is the microlight that offers the greatest free-flight sensations: no enclosed cockpit, direct contact with the air, a 180° panoramic view.
Is it dangerous?
Flex-wing microlight flying is a supervised and regulated activity. At Aliz’Air, all flights are conducted by a state-certified instructor with more than 15 years of experience. Our microlights are approved and regularly maintained.
Will I experience vertigo?
No! Vertigo only occurs when you are in contact with the ground. In flight, you are floating in the air: no vertigo, just freedom and wonder.
